Samantha Dholakia on The Behaviour Balance System

Samantha Dholakia shares her fresh, collaborative approach to supporting children's behaviour through teaching rather than managing.
· August 29, 2025

Samantha Dholakia has a BA Hons Degree in Education and Teaching, a background in Health and Social Care, and a Diploma in Psychology, so, unsurprisingly, her approach is grounded in evidence-based strategies that deliver results. She started her journey supporting children within an SEND school and with her growing enthusiasm she trained as a nursery nurse, Montessori teacher, Primary teacher and Deputy Head.

She has nearly 20 years experience in education and childcare, across a wide range of ages and stages, in a range of roles such as Deputy Head, Head of EYFS, Head of KS1, RMT Literacy Consultant Trainer, and behaviour specialist.

And Samantha is the proud creator of The Behaviour Balance System© and The Behaviour Bank© – an alternative approach to behaviour which is science-led, research backed and includes working with parents as a key ethos.

In this fascinating conversation, Samantha shares practical insights into her Behaviour Balance System, explaining how traditional behaviour management strategies often fall short and why her collaborative, holistic approach offers a more effective alternative. She explores how educators can move away from rewards and punishments towards teaching behaviour as a skill, similar to how we teach reading or mathematics, while ensuring parents are fully involved in the process.

In this episode you’ll:

  • Discover why traditional behaviour management techniques like time-outs and reward charts can actually be counterproductive and what the evidence says about their effectiveness
  • Learn how to teach behaviour as a skill, chunking it down like any other learning area rather than expecting immediate mastery
  • Explore the ‘road to regulation’ approach and how it helps children understand their emotions as ‘fuel’ for their journey
  • Understand the critical importance of checking your own belief systems and how they impact your responses to children’s behaviour
  • Find out how to create meaningful collaboration with parents around behaviour, even with those who are typically harder to reach

Watch this episode to discover a refreshing, evidence-based approach to supporting children’s behaviour that respects their developmental journey while creating practical strategies that actually work in busy early years settings.
