Barbara Schindelhauer is founder of Numberland and Early Years enthusiast. After several years in Sales and Marketing in the international consumer goods industry, Barbara changed career path, starting her own business to contribute to the development of children without being overambitious – but letting the good things happen and enjoying these precious early years.

In 2004, Barbara volunteered in her children’s kindergarten, and came across the Numberland research project by early childhood pedagogue Dr. Gerhard Friedrich.

Since then, she has trained many hundreds of teachers, in Germany and internationally, in very different settings. In 2011 she became co-author of Dr. Friedrich’s German best seller Numberland book. Her latest children’s picture book, co-authored with Australian teacher Mark Hansen, “My Garden is a Square” has already been published in 7 languages.

In this session, Barbara Schindelhauer introduces the Numberland approach, a research-backed, play-based method for building early mathematical understanding in children aged three to six. Barbara explains how Numberland translates the abstract language of maths into a rich, concrete and emotionally engaging world that children genuinely want to explore, supporting not only maths but also language development, personal, social and emotional development, and cross-curricular learning, all through imaginative play.

In this episode you’ll:

  • Explore how Number Street, number houses and garden activities build subitising, partitioning, number bonds and one-to-one correspondence through play
  • Discover why Numberland supports language development and works especially well for children with EAL
  • Find out how the “trickster” character builds emotional resilience around making mistakes
  • Learn how to get started in your own setting, from enhancing your maths area to free downloadable resources

Watch this session to see Numberland in action and discover how one approach can weave together numbers, shapes, patterns and language in a way children genuinely enjoy.
