Rachel Buckler has over 30 years of experience of working within the context of safeguarding and child protection particularly in the Early Years. Rachel spent 25 years working in social care and developing early intervention services for Local Authorities in the Northwest of England. She is co-founder of the Early Years Hub and supports numerous early years settings, schools and local authorities as a trainer and consultant. She has been an Early Years inspector and still works closely with Ofsted in the context of her role as co-chair of the North West Ofsted Big Conversation (#NWOBC).
Her new book is called Developing Child-Centred Practice for Safeguarding and Child Protection: Strategies for Every Early Years Setting, part of the Little Minds Matter series from Routledge.
In this interview, Rachel explains the importance of strategies, as well as knowledge, when considering safeguarding and child protection, especially taking into consideration the three protective factors from the assessment framework: Child’s developmental needs, family & environmental factors and parenting capacity.
Rachel goes on to explain how to analyse a situation for a child, using observations, patterns of behaviour and how to use this information in decision-making. We also discuss the role of intuition (or that ‘gut feeling’) and how Eileen Munro’s writing has influenced Rachel’s thinking around this useful tool.
Rachel suggests a 3-point strategy for decision making, for all Early Years professionals, whether you are a Designated Safeguard Lead or not.
Finally, we discuss how to use some of these strategies when working with other professionals and how Rachel’s book can help to support this.
Rachel uses examples throughout to illustrate the strategies and help explain how they can be used as part of good practice.
