Nuzhat Abbas on cultural identity through story and song

In this interview, we discuss how Nuzhat used lockdown to support families through the PEEP programme, including reaching parents who wouldn't normally come to the live sessions! We discuss the importance of home culture, home language and how songs are an excellent way to share this.

Nuzhat Abbas is a singer, writer and narrator of many books for both children and adults. She has also produced a CD and booklet – Singing Together in Urdu and Punjabi. Nuzhat works with South Asian families on the Peep project (Peeple: supporting parents and children learn together), based in Oxford.

In this interview, we discuss how Nuzhat used lockdown to support families through the PEEP programme, including reaching parents who wouldn’t normally come to the live sessions! We discuss the importance of home culture, home language and how songs are an excellent way to share this. Nuzhat also explains the results of two research projects: Time to Play and Music Moves.

We finish the interview with two songs sung beautifully by Nuzhat.
