Jessica Sandall started management life for Busy Bees Nurseries, first as a room manager in 2008 and working her way up through a Nursery manager, Operational Projects Lead and Area Director, where she supports an area of 12 centres.
She is committed to staff development and wellbeing and fostering a brilliant culture and environment for all to thrive in.
We start by discussing the problems with staff recruitment, retention and finding good quality staff. Jessica explains how Busy Bees has tackled this by cutting back on agency staff and recruiting teachers. She discusses how having teachers in a setting has encouraged shared pedagogy with other staff and been a positive influence with families too.
Jessica explains how their recruitment drive has seen an increase of 700 apprentice, who will become ‘home-grown’ talent and hopefully fill staff spaces in the future. She is also enthusiastic about having a range of qualification levels and has ideas for retaining those staff who are amazing with the children, whatever their qualification level.
As Jessica says: “We’re in the 21st century, we’ve got to have 21st century leadership strategies”
