Helen Armstrong on respectful, calm mealtimes for babies and toddlers

Introduction

Helen Armstrong is an infant and toddler specialist and fully qualified, registered early childhood teacher and offers knowledge from 12 years of working with children, families and professionals. She is guided by the work of Dr Emmi Pikler and Magda Gerber’s Educaring® Approach. Helen works with families and professionals towards lives that embody peace, respect and simplicity.

It is her passion to inspire and empower caregivers and educators of young children with these principles and practices.

Her mission is to help adults to see the child in a new way and develop deeply respectful, reciprocal and authentic relationships. Through this understanding, adults will experience the joy that will come from this way of being with children.

In this interview, we discuss Dr Emmi Pikler and Magda Gerber’s approaches and principles. Helen explains how you can apply these principles to mealtimes for the birth to three age range – ensuring we are respectful when feeding babies, toddlers and older children. She also has some top strategies for practitioners and educators to ensure beautiful mealtimes, whatever the age of the children, as well as helpful advice for parents.
