· November 24, 2023

Felicity is a landscape architect, trainer and educator with a wealth of expertise in working alongside Primary schools, Secondary schools and Early Years settings.

She is also a practicing artist and is a ‘scientist in residence’ in Early Years and primary settings, promoting STEAM subjects to young learners and engaging them in making the practical changes, as well as giving inspiration and practical support for teachers to take action and make positive changes in their settings.

Felicity has also written a fabulous book called “Naturally Inclusive – a new approach to design for play”

In this episode, Felicity shares ingenious ideas to inspire creativity and curiosity outdoors. She teaches you how to utilise natural materials like sticks, leaves, and stones in open-ended art prompts that develop problem solving skills. Discover sensory science experiments that foster critical thinking through questioning “why.” Felicity also suggests some great ways to create design challenges that give children a brief to work towards, facilitating communication and presentation abilities.

Felicity stresses the importance of nature play for vocabulary growth, risk-taking, and health, with tips to add biophilic elements that connect children to the natural world. You’ll also learn how to adapt activities to engage every child’s interests and perspectives.

Packed with practical examples and enthusiasm for empowering the child’s voice, this episode will reinvigorate your approach to STEAM. Time to take STEAM learning outside!

Note: Felicity and I discuss biophilic design, including teasels – which are technically a biomimicry design. It is a fascinating area, so I’ve added a few links about biophilia below as well.
