Dorothy Waide on 12 Weeks to 12 Months – Sleep and Nutrition

Dorothy Waide, is a Karitane Mothercraft Nurse and best selling author, and is one of New Zealand’s leading sleep consultants with over 35 years baby nursing and sleep-settling experience both in New Zealand and around the world.

Dorothy is absolutely passionate about babies. In fact, in today’s world she could be called a ‘baby whisperer’. However in Dorothy’s words you are your baby’s whisperer, the only person who instinctively knows what feels right.

In this interview, Dorothy explains how routines are important, but need to have some flexibility. Understanding the wake cycles and nap times will help to transition routines to those suitable for children aged 12 months. Obviously settling babies to sleep and self-soothing are huge areas of discussion at this age, so Dorothy explains how to show your baby how to go from large movements to small movements, how white noise should be used, dummies and how light levels affect sleep.

Dorothy refers to the two nutrients at this age – sleep and food. She demonstrates how feeding to sleep can be done successfully, including how to transfer from breast to bottle (it’s all in the angle the bottle is at), babies’ requirements and choosing the right formula for the right situation. We also cover the introduction of solid food to a baby’s diet (finger foods dipped in puree is a genius idea!), sleep disruption due to teething and safe bed sharing.
