Ann Marie Christian is an international safeguarding and Child Protection consultant, trainer, author and trouble-shooter. Ann Marie has independently supported hundreds of organisations in strengthening their safeguarding agenda.
She’s an associate for various organisations including the NSPCC. She is also the safeguarding officer for her local parish and delivers annual training to the volunteers and sits on the church Safeguarding Committee who meet quarterly.
In this interview we discuss stereotypes and how unconscious bias can affect our pedagogy. We go onto to discuss how this may tip into discrimination or prejudice
Ann Marie explains how to be an ally, especially when it comes to race, and encouraging positive stories.
Ann Marie considers some difficult questions:
- Does your setting represent the world, even if you live in an area that is less multi-cultural, including a diverse workforce?
- How does the media affect children’s view of groups of people who are othered?
Ann Marie illustrates this sensitive subject throughout with lots of personal vignettes and stories from her own experiences. She also explains how active listening and understanding of different lived experiences can really help to overcome unconscious bias, whether that is race, class or people who have been othered in some way.
