Shawn Bryant on the CHILD Scale

In this session, Shawn discusses the importance of social and emotional learning in early childhood education and introduces a tool called the CHILD Scale (Climate of Healthy Interactions for Learning and Development) that assesses nine dimensions of social and emotional development in both adults and children. Shawn explains each of the nine dimensions and how it can also be adapted for parents and caregivers to use at home.

The CHILD scale focuses on meaningful introspection, conversation and action, encouraging adults to be facilitative.

Shawn Bryant is a nationally recognized professional development facilitator who brings 30 years of experience, expertise and commitment to advancing the work of adults involved in the lives of young children. He is a contributing author of the book Trauma-Responsive Family Engagement in Early Childhood Practices for Equity & Resilience, Author of Trauma-Informed Practices for Early Childhood Educators and a facilitator at the ECE Coaching Institute.

Shawn is Director and Principal Consultant with YesToECE on early childhood training, coaching and consultancy. He is also the Director of Professional Development for The CHILD Scale at Yale University Child Study Centre, where he coordinates and leads national trainings related to the CHILD Tool for early childhood mental health consultants, coaches, assessors, and researchers across disciplines.

In this session, Shawn discusses the importance of social and emotional learning in early childhood education and introduces a tool called the CHILD Scale (Climate of Healthy Interactions for Learning and Development) that assesses nine dimensions of social and emotional development in both adults and children.

Shawn explains each of the nine dimensions of social and emotional development – Transitions, Directions and Rules, Social & Emotional Learning, Adult Awareness, Adult Affect, Adult Cooperation, Adult-Child Interactions, Individualized & Developmentally Appropriate Practices and Child Behaviours. The CHILD scale is research-informed and regularly updated to reflect new research in the field.

The CHILD scale can also be adapted for parents and caregivers to use at home, using the innovative ‘ABCDE’ – Attention, Brain-building, Communication, Directions & Routines and Enjoyment.
